New Lexus RX – Apple CarPlay
One of the most anticipated solutions of the Lexus RX info-entertainment system was support for Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. We checked the first in detail. After connecting the smartphone with a cable to the USB socket hidden in the central glove box, the CarPlay function becomes available and can be turned on at any time. Depending on the applications installed on your device, the number of options available in the menu may vary. In our case, it was easy to start from the level of Lexux's info-entertainment system, including Google Maps or the Yanosik application. Also, every application prepared by Apple worked without any problem. In everyday use it certainly facilitates using the smartphone in a much safer and more convenient way. It is a pity that Apple CarPlay does not work wirelessly, because induction smartphone charging can be found in the Lexus RX 2020.
Last but not least, the touch screen multimedia system is an improvement. For this reason, he was closer to the driver – on top of the dashboard. Some people complained about the way of operating the Lexus info-entertainment system using a specific manipulator or touchpad. Touch operation eliminates this problem.
One thing has not changed: the Lexus RX still offers an extremely high quality interior finish. Individual elements are made almost entirely of precious materials, and fitting does not raise any objections. Although modern technical solutions can be found here at virtually every step, the very characteristic style of Lexus makes us feel wrapped up, cared for and "almost at home", such a classic, luxurious. It's a completely different experience compared to German rivals.
Lexus Safety System + 2 – new safety systems
The new Lexus RX has also been improved in terms of advanced, active active safety systems: Lexus Safety System +2. They are designed to minimize the risk of collision by supporting the driver in times of his weakness – e.g. inattention or staring. The Lexus Safety System +2 includes, among others the following systems:
Pre-Collision System (PCS) – anti-collision system with the function of detecting pedestrians during the day and at night, as well as cyclists during the day. A system using radars and cameras alerts the driver about the risk of collision. It prepares the braking system and seat belts for emergency braking. In the absence of a response from the driver, the system will automatically start braking to avoid collision. In the event of an inevitable collision, the system may actively try to bypass the obstacle by interfering with the steering (Active Steering Assist).
Front Cross-Traffic Alert – this feature is similar to the Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, except that it works when driving forward. As a result, regardless of whether we leave the front or rear of the parking space (or e.g. from the garage, narrow street), the system thanks to special radars mounted in the rear and front bumpers will warn us about cross traffic. So Lexus joins a very exclusive group of cars that have this type of solution (selected BMW models and Audi (Cross Traffic Assist Rear & Front)).
Lexus CoDrive – is a Lexus semi-autonomous driving system. Of course, it uses Adaptive Cruise Control (Dynamic Radar Cruise Control – DRCC) and Lane Tracing Assist (LTA). Both solutions operate in the full speed range, which enables semi-automatic traffic in traffic jams.
BladeScan AHS – these are fully adaptive Lexus RX headlights that use fast-rotating mirrors. The incident light from the diodes is directed in the right direction, so as to ensure, on the one hand, a maximum range of lights and on the other, not to dazzle other road users. Surely you will want to check it soon during the night tests in Poland.
Lexus talks a lot about the "democratization" of modern security systems. Indeed, most solutions, including active lane assist, impact protection, and adaptive cruise control are standard on every version of the RX. Again, however, you have to decide on the high version of FSport or the highest Omotenashi to receive a blind spot monitoring system or exit from a parking space. Also only in these two equipment versions will we get adaptive BladeScan high beam or adaptive shock absorbers. It is not possible to buy these systems for lower equipment versions. The same applies to the great quality Head-Up Display (HUD), which is an option in FSport and the standard in Omotenashi. In lower versions it cannot be bought.
The new Lexus RX has been armed with several interesting solutions to improve its behavior on the road. I am talking about stiffened stabilizers or more efficient (adaptive) shock absorbers, which are to be simply faster. The latter are also better to reduce vibration from the wheels. An interesting solution also seems to be the system that reduces understeer in corners – Active Cornering Assist (ACA) – incl. through the appropriate work of the differential.
The distinguishing feature of almost every Lexus is of course the hybrid drive. It is no different in the case of the Lexus RX, which can be driven by a hybrid unit marked 450h with a system power of 313 HP, which uses a 3.5-liter gasoline unit in the V6 system, which is to provide a sprint to 100 km / h in about 7.7 seconds and fuel consumption in the WLTP cycle is 6.7 – 8 l / 100 km.
Four-wheel drive – E-Four – is implemented by an additional electric motor driving the rear wheels. Its power is 50 kW (65 hp) and this is also the maximum rear axle can receive. The front engine – also the electric one – already offers much higher parameters: 123 kW (167 hp), which enables really efficient driving in zero-emission mode over short distances.
For those who are not interested in a high level of power, as well as do not need four-wheel drive, there is a Lexus RX 300, which uses a 2-liter gasoline unit with 175 (238 hp), which provides acceleration up to 100 km / h in about 9.5 s. Fuel consumption, which was to be expected, is higher than in the hybrid version and amounts to (WLTP) 9.9-10.5 l / 100 km. This engine can also operate in atkinson mode (more economical).
How is the new Lexus RX driving?
The winding roads with numerous turns, which we had the opportunity to use during test drives allowed us to check in practice the assurances of the manufacturer, referred to above. Adaptive suspension, stiffer body and completely new anti-roll bars make the new Lexus RX react quickly to driver's commands – especially for its considerable dimensions – and with grace and neutrality overcomes subsequent turns. One could also feel the effect of the understeer reduction (ACA) system, which actually reduced the spinning of the inner wheel after a strong addition of gas in a tight arc.
The tuning of the hybrid drive, however, leaves no doubt, the new Lexus RX is definitely focused on comfort. Thanks to the stepless eCVT transmission, the car accelerates harmoniously, without the slightest jerks, and you don't feel the increasing speed in the car completely. You can only see the rapidly moving speedometer hand under the dictation of the right foot. Also, the reaction to a stronger pressure on the gas pedal is very fast, which is the result of the specificity of the operation of electric motors.
In the delicate terrain in which we had the opportunity to move, the Lexus RX performed very well and above all very comfortable. However, we did not have the opportunity to check it in more extreme conditions. However, it seems to me that it is not a car created for heavy terrain, and the target user will not feel like "venturing" in such places;)
