Surface Laptop 3 – AMD for people, Intel for business
The Surface Laptop 3 version with a 15-inch screen is only available with AMD Ryzen processors as standard. However, there is a business version that is based on Intel processors based on the 10th generation Core architecture. Theoretically, the latter model should not be on sale, but nothing prevents you from ordering it directly on Microsoft's website. Taking advantage of this opportunity service Tom’s Hardware he made a small comparison of two very similar prices.
The specification of both computers can be found in the table below. Ryzen 5 3580U is a system equipped with 4 cores and serving 8 threads, whose base clock speed is 2.1 GHz. In turbo mode it increases to 3.7 GHz. It is important, however, that this system is based on Zen + architecture, i.e. older than Ryzen desktop processors produced in 7 nm lithography. The Intel processor also has 4 cores and 8 threads, and its base clock speed is 1.3 GHz and 3.9 GHz in turbo mode. Graphic layouts as well as the rest of the specifications are comparable here. The $ 100 difference in price can be attributed to the Windows 10 Pro business version.

Surface Laptop 3 is also available with a layout from the Ryzen 7 family, but its price is a minimum of $ 2099, so the configuration above is more suitable for comparison. Unfortunately, as it turns out, it clearly loses to Intel.
AMD stands out from Intel
Unfortunately for Microsoft and AMD, it turns out that the Intel platform is much more efficient. I will not paste the graphs here, everyone can check them out, but the differences are significant. Not only in terms of CPU performance, but also for example SSD (282 MB / s vs 508 MB / s for Intel, although here we have 2 different disk providers) or even graphics card performance. It turns out that Intel Iris Plus performs better than Vega 9, and so far AMD has had an advantage over Intel in the field of integrated graphics. The difference is not big, but we already know more or less what you can expect from Ice Lake architecture.
The icing on the cake is the battery life. AMD does not look bad, it reaches 8 hours of operation in the test, but Intel in the same conditions reaches 9 hours and 31 minutes. This is again clearly a better result. The conclusion of this article is unequivocal, with such a small difference in price, it's not worth buying the standard version. Choosing a business model is much better. This should also make AMD think, delaying the launch of mobile processors for almost a year compared to desktop layouts will not improve the company's position in the notebook market.
