The new Audi Q7 2020

The new Audi Q7 2020 is primarily a technical update. Design changes are rather small and mainly apply to headlights, front radiator grille (so-called singleframe) or e.g. a chrome strip connecting the rear lights. These changes meant that although the overall outline of the car did not change significantly, it is quite easy to distinguish the Audi Q7 2020 from the model before the lift. Of course, the easiest way is to recognize the characteristic pattern on the LED headlights. Key changes occurred, however, in the interior of the new Audi Q7, as well as "under the hood". What exactly?

HD Matrix LED with laser light

Audi Q7 even in the 2015-2019 version was equipped with Matrix LED adaptive matrix headlights with the optional Night Vision system – an infrared camera cooperating with a system detecting people and animals. I wrote about it in the article How to not kill a pedestrian on the road at night. That system was already working great, as demonstrated by this video:

The new Audi Q7 can be equipped with one of three front lighting solutions: standard LED headlights, LED Matrix (a solution known from the version before the lift) and HD Matrix LED system – identical to the one that I discussed extensively in relation to the Audi A6 and A7. Currently – in my opinion – the best system of adaptive headlights on the market, especially in combination with Night Vision.

Additional laser light is, of course, separate diodes that turn on a few seconds after the road ahead is completely empty. They "burn" road lights (the so-called long ones) increasing the view range to several hundred (!) Meters. Driving at night with this HD Matrix LED package is really a pleasure and it is not difficult to see the potential danger even if it is at a distance of e.g. 200 meters from us!

Importantly, the HD Matrix LED has been valued quite sensibly, because you have to pay extra PLN 13,820, so only a few percent of the value of the entire car.

Pneumatic sports suspension as standard

The Audi Q7 2020 is already standard with a pneumatic suspension with a sporty character. It allows you to adjust the ground clearance in the range of 90 mm. Relative to the standard position, when driving fast on the highway, it decreases by 30 mm, while when driving on difficult terrain it can be raised by 60 mm, e.g. to cross an obstacle. Audi "pneumatics" is great for everyday use, because it provides not only high comfort, but above all a sensational level of grip on typical, not very smooth roads for Poland. The customer can of course order the standard air suspension, which increases the default ground clearance by the said 15 mm.

Active stabilization of lateral inclination together with the rear wheel steering system

The first Audi SQ7 primarily impressed in two respects: the extremely powerful V8 TDI engine in the entire rev range with a reasonable fuel demand, as well as the torsional rear axle system with side roll stabilization. These two elements meant that the SQ7 was extremely highly rated by a professional racing driver – Robert Czarnecki – for extremely high cornering performance, as well as great performance. The car drove as if it were almost two times lighter! Of course, the quattro permanent all-wheel drive system with a central differential and the limited slip differential at the rear axle matched this. This further improves agility in fast cornering.

The new Audi Q7 2020

Now both these solutions are available not only in the refreshed Audi SQ7 TDI, but also in every other version of the new Q7: also 50 TDI or 55 TFSI quattro. I wrote more about this solution in relation to the Audi A6 and A7. The rear steering axle improves stability on quickly negotiated curves (the wheels turn 2 degrees in the same direction), and also improves the maneuverability in tight turns and in the parking lot – the difference is 1 meter in the turning circle – the wheels turn 5⁰ in the opposite direction than front! Active lateral stabilization uses a 48-volt electrical system to control the stabilizers. In comfort mode, it allows them to move freely, which reduces shocks. During dynamic driving, not only fastens both sides of the rod, but above all, applies a force opposite to the suspension sag. As a result, the Audi Q7 / SQ7 significantly tilts less in the quickly traveled curve, which not only improves the driving experience, but above all dramatically increases the level of grip.

More direct progressive steering is working with the above systems, which has a higher gear ratio than the previous generation. Now you need to turn the steering wheel 2.4 times to make a full turn. This is of course another borrowing technique from Audi A6 / A7 / A8.

The new Audi SQ7 TDI 2020

The whole Advanced dynamic driving package with rear steering axle costs quite a lot, 25,000 zlotys, but in my opinion, next to HD Matrix LED is one of the most cost-effective additions to the new Q7 or SQ7. These systems significantly affect the daily pickup of the car – it is more agile, more stable not only on the highway, but also on a less level road, as well as much easier to "embrace" in the parking lot due to the smaller turning circle.

The interior of the new Audi Q7 like in the flagship limousines

Looking inside the new Audi Q7 we will see that it was practically 1: 1 moved from the flagship limousines: Audi A8 and A6. Two large touch screens with haptic feedback, a new virtual cockpit. Feel the modernity … as well as the quality for which Audi is perfectly known and what you do not need to comment on in greater detail. For more information on this topic, I invite you to discuss the interior of the Audi A6.

Of course, there is noticeably more space inside the Audi Q7 – especially in the rear of the cabin. In this matter nothing has changed compared to its predecessor – it is equally vast. This also applies to the trunk.

360 degree camera

The 360 degree camera system has also come to the new Audi Q7. It uses four wide-angle cameras located at the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as under the mirrors. It makes parking easier and allows you to look out from behind another car, e.g. around the corner of a building / fence. In certain situations, it dramatically improves security. The driver can choose the view he is interested in, including observing how close to the curb the car's wheels are.

Modern security systems

The new Audi Q7 retrofitted with a full safety system package that we know from the A6, A7 and Q8 models. Speech incl. about the most advanced front assist (warns about the risk of collision, and if necessary brakes on its own), blind spot monitoring system, transverse warning system (also from the front) or even an intersection assistant. All this I have discussed extensively in relation to the Audi A6.

The new Audi Q7 and SQ7 have also been equipped with an emergency stop system if the driver falls asleep or collapses.

Driver support systems

We also have a package of solutions similar to the Audi A6 and A7 for driver assistance assistants. It includes adaptive and predictive cruise control with the function of adapting speed to road restrictions as well as responding to intersections or turns. It works with active lane assist over the full speed range, which also means that the new Audi Q7 and SQ7 have a fully effective traffic jam assistant.

The new Audi Q7 is also equipped with the Car2X system, which allows communication not only between cars – danger warnings are sent in this way – but also extends the possibility of predictive and adaptive cruise control. In selected European cities, it provides information about the current color of traffic lights, which allows better matching of speed to conditions, as well as further reduction of fuel consumption.

Mild Hybrid on all engine versions of the Audi Q7

I have already written many times about the soft hybrid system (Mild Hybrid) and have even devoted separate material on this subject in relation to the Audi A6 and A7 (Mild Hybrid test). This solution is standard in all engine versions of the Audi Q7: 45 TDI, 50 TDI or 55 TFSI. Unfortunately, it is not in the Audi SQ7 V8 TDI. It supports the internal combustion engine during acceleration, and also reduces fuel consumption in several ways: turns off the engine after removing the foot from the gas thus allowing free sailing with slow speed loss, turns off the engine in the last braking stage (below about 20 km / h), supports the operation of many electrical components in the car, and energy is recovered during deceleration.

The refreshed Mercedes E-Class will debut in Geneva, this is how it should look

Below is a video presenting the performance of the twin brother Audi Q7 – Audi Q8 50 TDI quattro tiptronic, which is equipped with an identical drive. I will conduct Q7 fuel consumption tests soon, during the full test of this car.

The new Audi Q7 2020

As I mentioned, the Audi Q7 is available in several engine versions. They all have an 8-speed tiptronic transmission, as well as permanent quattro four-wheel drive with a central, self-locking differential. All engine versions – except the SQ7 V8 TDI – are 3-liter units in the V6 system. A little later, the offer will also include a Plug-In hybrid: 55 TFSI e with 375 HP and 60 TFSI e with 450 HP. The versions currently offered in Poland look as follows:

  • Audi Q7 45 TDI: 170 kW (231 HP), 500 Nm, 0-100 km / h in 7.1 s, 6.9-6.8 l / 100 km
  • Audi Q7 50 TDI: 210 kW (286 HP), 600 Nm, 0-100 km / h in 6.3 s, 6.8-6.6 l / 100 km
  • Audi Q7 55 TFSI: 250 kW (340 hp), 500 Nm, 0-100 km / h in 5.9 s, 8.9-8.7 l / 100 km
  • Audi SQ7 V8 TDI: 320 kW (435 HP), 900 Nm, 0-100 km / h in 4.8 s, 7.6-7.4 l / 100 km

Prices of the new Audi Q7

The new Audi Q7 45 TDI quattro tiptronic starts from PLN 293 500. It is powered by a 45 TDI (3.0 TDI V6) engine with 170 kW (231 hp). The most popular on the Polish market will undoubtedly be the 50 TDI quattro tiptronic version, which has been valued at 330,000. zł. It will not be difficult, however, to exceed 400,000 more by retrofitting this car. However, these are completely normal prices in this segment – comparable to direct competition such as BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE or Volvo XC90.

The new Audi Q7 2020

At the top of the range is of course the new Audi SQ7 with V8 TDI engine, which was valued at PLN 449 900. A lot, but you have to remember that many elements of the equipment are already standard for this car. At the same time: it's hard for a direct rival. Only the BMW X5 M50d with a 400-horsepower but 6-cylinder diesel engine is actually close.

At the end

The new Audi Q7 has undergone a great refreshment – it has been equipped with almost all the latest technical solutions that are currently available in the Audi offer. The differences from the version before the lift are very large, so that from my point of view I can talk about a basically new car, because in virtually every aspect the new Q7 is more modern, more refined, more economical, simply better. The new Audi Q7, like the A6 or A7, is a car at the highest technological level, which additionally impresses with comfort, agility on the road, as well as the luxurious character of the interior. The only question is whether it can cope with internal competition in the form of the Audi Q8, which, although slightly less practical, however, according to many looks much more attractive, and in technical terms it offers the same.

It seems that the fight between the Audi Q7 and Q8 and the BMW X5, X6 and Mercedes GLE in 2020 will be extremely fierce, because the level in this segment turns out to be extremely high!
