Artificial intelligence in the service of humanity
For some, artificial intelligence is only an empty slogan, others perceive it as a threat to humanity, and others have a neutral attitude and look at it as a natural direction of technology development. It must be admitted that currently solutions using it can delight and you can clearly see that now you can find projects in which the abbreviation SI really means something.
Future Talks – meetings with the future
Recently, on May 31, 2019, a dedicated meeting was held business and legal aspects of artificial intelligence. The event was attended by experts who discussed topics related to AI not only from the technical or business side, but also legal. It cannot be denied that the law is rarely able to keep up with new technologies. Experts in this discussion were: Roman Bieda, dr inż. Jarosław Bułka and Piotr Biczyk.
Future Talks itself is the only series in Poland of prestigious, interdisciplinary meetings devoted to the future, combining fireside chat in a modified form with a moderated discussion, during which specialists answer previously asked questions of participants. The project was born from the fascination of its creators with the opportunities offered by innovative solutions and modern technologies in combination with human intelligence, but also from reflection on the potential of artificial intelligence and the automation of more and more areas of life. The motivation to create Future Talks was also the desire to educate on development through innovation and preparation for changes caused by the constant development of technology and science.
However, on October 24 at the Book Fair in Krakow, as part of the conference of the Lesser Poland Library Forum under the patronage of the Mayor of the City of Krakow, there will be another special edition of Future Talks, this time focused around the topic Artificial intelligence in the world of books. You can register for the event at this link. More information about the project itself can be found here: http://futuretalks.pl/.
Interview: How does artificial intelligence help in medicine?
Dr. Eng. Jarosław Bułka
A graduate of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics of the AGH, Biocybernetics with 20 years of academic experience in the Department of Automatics and Biomedical Engineering of the AGH. Author of over 50 publications in the areas of artificial intelligence, neural networks, telemedicine, telediagnostics and biomedical engineering. In business, he deals with signal and data analysis, machine learning models and the digital transformation of organizations and the optimization of their processes, telemedicine and telecare, especially in the context of an aging society. Co-organizer of many industry conferences, panelist and promoter of research and development activities as well as the transfer of knowledge from science to business. Secretary of the Accreditation Committee of Technical Universities. A technological expert of the Association of Polish Poviats and the Krakow Technology Park. Member of the Małopolska Innovation Council and Scientific Council of the Malopolska Center for Translational Medicine. Director of the New Technologies Department of the National Institute of Senior Economy. A member of the Life Science Cluster Foundation Council until 2018. Organizer and implementer of many innovative R&D projects. Co-founder and until 2018 a member of the management board in Silvermedia capital group companies. IT and artificial intelligence expert at the Institute of Food and Nutrition. Currently owner Sophilution, a company dealing with data analysis and digital transformation of the organization, the president of MedDataSolution a company dealing with the analysis and use of diagnostic data. Plenipotentiary of the Mayor of Krakow for Digital Transformation.
What was the most interesting use case that you had the opportunity to work on?
I don't have such a project. Regardless of whether the project is for the industry, telecommunications or energy company, everyone is interesting because … everyone is different. However, I like the most those related to medicine or diagnostics. Algorithms that automate the diagnostic process while supporting doctors in their daily work are always projects that are extremely enjoyable, because by implementing them you know that the result of your work will have a real impact on the comfort of the doctor's work and improving the quality of patient service. Artificial intelligence and machine learning have had and continue to be of great importance in medicine. Regardless of whether they involve complex imaging diagnostics or activities that build proper health behaviors at users, which always supports prevention. Therefore, this translates into someone's health in a real way!
Is the concept artificial intelligence is a buzz word or is there real value for it in every industry?
At one of the last conferences I saw a nice slide. The author placed on it two sentences that sounded loosely translated:
If it was written in R or Python, it is probably machine learning.
If it was written in Power Point, it probably is artificial intelligence.
Currently, the concept of artificial intelligence is often used freely in the media. Usually to emphasize that there is something tech. superinnowacyjne. It is forgotten that machine learning and so-called deep learning are simply … mathematics – concepts that have been known for decades J Now, however, we only have the necessary information technology to process large data sets in real time. The computing power of the "cloud" or supercomputers only recently gives the possibility of widespread and effective use of data collected for years in various systems or collected today in solutions using, for example, IoT technology.
What effect do modern technologies have on the development of medicine? What new products can we expect in this respect in the coming years?
Analysis of diagnostic data, correlating this data with therapy results, ML and AI support in the analysis of medical images, diagnostic decision support systems, modeling of complex biological systems, analytical support in clinical studies are just some examples of the use of machine learning algorithms and artificial intelligence affecting in a huge way on the quality and speed of results. It must be remembered that behind every test, every analysis, every diagnostic process, there are real people, patients who need the test results as soon as possible or indicate the right therapy! There are probably no better examples than diagnostics and therapy support to show how ML and AI technology can serve people.
Can we already conclude that solutions using various elements of artificial intelligence help save lives?
Definitely yes. Acceleration of diagnostic processes, especially in oncology, rare diseases and also in geriatrics, where it is common to meet the so-called multi-morbidity and multi-medication in patients directly translates into the effectiveness of therapy. In one of the implemented projects we were dealing with the automatic analysis of MRI images of the liver of young children. The use of automatic analysis of these images allowed reducing the time of diagnosis and therapy by several months and eliminating from the diagnosis process a biopsy, extremely painful and at risk of complications of the procedure.

Do you think that people will be able to fully trust artificial intelligence?
Oh, that's an extremely difficult question. There have been too many movies in cinemas lately in which artificial intelligence takes power over people and the world to assume that people will accept it without any resistance 🙂
The coolest thing about this technology, however, is that people often declare that they are very afraid of it and do not realize that they use it on a daily basis in smartphone applications, websites, navigation or even using it when driving cars that are able to stay on the road or recognize traffic signs.
We live in a time when we can no longer escape AI technology. We just have to learn to live with it, implement it wisely and use it just like centuries ago, our ancestors had to accept steam engines, electricity, cars, telephony, radio and television.
